ID represents documentary “My Joan of Arc” for 600th anniversary of French female icon

Montreal-based ID Communications takes on world distribution rights to documentary exploring the historic Joan of Arc, celebrating 600th anniversary of “child-soldier-saint”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Berlin, Germany – ID Communications Inc. announces the market premiere screening of  “My Joan of Arc” ID’s latest acquisition, at the European Film Market in Berlin by French Canadian director Dany Chiasson, in anticipation of the French icon’s 600th birthday anniversary.

Though canonized a saint in the 1920’s, Joan of Arc was in fact burned alive at the stake by the religious powers of the day who were unsettled by her unswerving faith, which at the time was construed to be heretical.

“As a little girl I went to church every Sunday with my grandmother. While we walked, rain or shine, twenty minutes back and forth, my grandmother told me stories of Saints and the meaning of Sainthood. Her favourite saint was Joan of Arc.  Through Joan of Arc’s story, I learned about devotion, courage, going beyond our limits, France, the medieval times, women, The Catholic Church, the big schism, royalty…all that was fascinating to me. I wanted to meet Joan of Arc, I wanted to hang out with her. Years later I continued to research Joan and her time in books and in movies. But the more I read, the more she became a mystery. said Dany Chiasson, the film’s director.

My Joan of Arc (“Ma jeanne d’arc” in its original version) is set for its first international market screening at the European Film Market in Berlin today, following its festival premiere at IDFA 2011 in Amsterdam in November.

“When I saw this film in Amsterdam, I was intrigued by its unique pacing for a documentary, the way its lush slow poetic sequences seemed much more like a fiction film than a documentary. Dany has managed to create a piece eerily stopped in time, revisiting perhaps one of the best-loved coming-of-age stories of feminine strength of character.  As this year is the 600th anniversary, the film will no doubt benefit from a wide range of festivals, and events planned to celebrate the girl who is reputed to have saved France from a terrible period of domination at the hands of the English.”

The film screens in Berlin for international buyers, after which it will be prepared for its Canadian release.  It will also become available on 411films.com after its theatrical screenings in select cinemas.
